The 2026 El Niño season is here. Let's go fishing. 🎣

 Based on the current late-August 2026 Southern California bite, this is shaping up to be a very exciting warm-water season. Recent reports are showing strong yellowtail activity, increasing offshore tuna opportunities, and dorado showing up in Southern California waters. Long Beach reports are also producing yellowtail, bonito and calico, while recent offshore counts include bluefin, yellowfin and dorado. 

The 2026 El Niño season is bringing some incredible warm-water fishing to Southern California, and River King Offshore is right in the middle of it.

Warm water has pushed an exciting mix of pelagic species into Southern California waters, creating opportunities for Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail and Dorado. Recent reports have shown yellowtail biting around the islands and along the Southern California coast, while offshore boats are finding impressive numbers of bluefin, yellowfin and dorado. 

From our home waters in Long Beach, California, we have the ability to fish a variety of productive areas depending on current conditions, bait and where the fish are moving.

The local Long Beach grounds can provide outstanding opportunities without making a long run offshore. Horseshoe Kelp and surrounding structure can hold calico bass, sand bass, bonito, barracuda and yellowtail, with the possibility of pelagic fish showing up when conditions are right. Recent local reports have shown yellowtail and bonito in the Long Beach area. 

Catalina Island remains one of Southern California's premier destinations for yellowtail and calico bass. Recent reports have shown quality yellowtail around the island, with fish in the 15–25 pound class being reported during the season. Catalina also offers opportunities for bonito, barracuda, sheephead and other species. 

When conditions line up, San Clemente Island can be an incredible yellowtail destination. The island's kelp and structure also provide excellent opportunities for calico bass, bonito, sheephead and other bottom species. Recent Southern California reports have produced yellowtail and strong calico bass action around San Clemente Island. 

This is where the 2026 warm-water season gets really exciting. Offshore waters are producing opportunities for Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado, with recent Southern California counts showing substantial numbers of all three species.

And the warm-water influence isn't just hype—current Pacific conditions are being strongly influenced by El Niño, with unusually warm water and elevated tropical activity across the Pacific.
